NOTE ON FLEXIBILITY:

Teachers may prefer to allocate 2 or more 45 minute sessions to this module, to allow students more time to respond online and re-watch videos. This would be particularly relevant, if additional, longer-term projects were determined as useful to consolidate and share knowledge and findings in the wider community.

4 Stages of brain development that every parent (& teacher) needs to know.

Topic 1 - What work does my brain do?

ONLINE CLASSROOM TASK

What is the brain & how does it work?

Follow up with discussion on what students think the main points were in the video. Emphasis in not so much on technical terms, but rather what the brain does to help us.

 

Here are some ideas:

Q. What are some things the brain controls?

A. Movement, decisions, memory, speech, breathing, sends signals to protect our bodies.

 

Q. What does the right side of the brain do?

A. Helps us with creativity, music art.

Q. What does the left side of the brain do?

A. Helps us with calculating, speech, thinking.

Q. How can you protect your brain: what are some of the 5 tips?

A. 5 tips included:

  • Protect brain i.e. with helmet when riding a bike;

  • Do physical exercise;

  • Eat healthy food;

  • Do mental health exercise i.e read books or do math problems;

  • Get 8 hours sleep a night;

INTERACTIVE WORK SHEETS FOR STUDENTS

How do I keep my brain young?

Topic 3 - Optional Activities

Work in a team to present information about ‘How to Keep a Healthy Brain’ to school assembly or other same-year level class groups.

AND / OR

Do a poster display about ‘My Healthy Brain’ and place in School Library, or community venue ie. Shopping centre. Alternatively, an electronic display in these venues could be developed in liaison with IT school and shopping centre personnel.
