Identifying and avoiding harmful substances - 45 minutes

1. What are some food, drinks and other substances that could harm my growing body?

2. What do I need to do to live a healthy lifestyle?

SUGGESTED SESSION TIME ALLOCATIONS:

NOTE ON FLEXIBILITY:

Teachers may prefer to allocate 2 or more 45 minute sessions to this module, to allow students more time to respond online and re-watch videos. This would be particularly relevant, if additional, longer-term projects were determined as useful to consolidate and share knowledge and findings in the wider community.

Topic 1 - What are some things that I eat, drink and ingest that will harm my growing body?

ONLINE CLASSROOM TASK

BRAINSTORMING

 

Ask students to come up with ideas: these may include (but not be limited to):

  • alcohol

  • secondhand smoke from tobacco, marijuana, vaping;

  • medicines from the pharmacy left within a child's reach, meant for other people; too much sugar, peanuts - some are allergic to them.

Watch and discuss one (or both) of the following videos:

Topic 2 - What do I need to do to live a healthy lifestyle?

ONLINE CLASSROOM TASK

Brainstorm healthy eating, exercise, getting enough sleep, avoiding cigarette and vaping smoke, ways to relax, washing hands before eating...

Discuss one (or both) of the following videos:

Four rules for a healthy lifestyle

Topic 3 - Optional Activities

QUIZ - Brain & Nervous System

Arrange with the canteen or home economics to make a range of healthy, but appealing foods to share with the class.

AND / OR

Work in a team to present information about 'food that keeps us fit' OR 'Why our body needs a healthy range of foods'.

It could be a poster or a video presentation. Arrange to have it displayed in the school library or at a special school event.
